So, Osama’s Dead
May. 3rd, 2011 09:25 amI’ve laughed at most of the pithy statements on Twitter.
I’m happy that Obama proved that he can take action when required.
But, you know, a guy is dead. Well, five people at least, from the sounds of it, and one who had been used as a human shield. Perhaps most of them deserved it, but at this point in my life I’m coming to the realization that I’m not an adequate judge of who should live and die. If you feel like you are, that’s fine. I don’t begrudge you your sense of judgment.
And I certainly don’t begrudge people their catharsis. Because I did feel some it, myself. This thing, that we’ve obsessed over, perhaps unhealthily, is done. Whatever else we think about the work left to do in Afghanistan, on an emotional level they can be treated, mostly, in an absence of this feeling of a need for vengeance. I’m never comfortable with the idea or the reality of vengeance, and I know it can lead people into some very dark places. I hope this is as close as we get to those places. I hope that, in whatever way, we can start to build things, take our lives in a more positive direction. To build this country up, and help bring the rest of the world with us.
