In The Home Stretch
Aug. 11th, 2007 05:49 pmOkay, enough science fiction navel-gazing. Back to work on finishing the office and bedroom.
Well, first, on Monday I borrowed a Bosch SDS from my co-worker. What’s that you ask? Well, it’s one of these:

Goes through concrete like buttah. So, in fairly quick succession, I managed to get the base plate fastened to the concrete. One thing I did have to do before that, however, was go out and buy some concrete anchors with hex heads, rather than the ordinary Phillips-head anchors. Problem was, with some of the holes I drilled was that when I tried to drive the anchor in, they got a little bound up about half an inch from being sunk all the way, and when you need more torque than a drill can provide, you’re not going to get it turning a screwdriver. A socket driver, on the other hand, does the trick nicely. When I got back with the hex-head anchors, I was able to drive the tough ones in the rest of the way that way. Looks all nice and semi-professional now.
After that, I finished cutting the tops of the ledges, and fastening them in. It’s a bit uneven in places, but I aim to take care of that with judicious sanding, routering, and heavy applications of joint compound and wood putty. Plus, that one ledge is going to get covered up by bookshelves in the end. As my Dad would say, “Covers a lot of sins.”

Also, you can’t tell that well from the picture. Looks all nice and even and square, yeah? Yeah.
Had to knock off for the afternoon when Tony went down for his nap, and sadly he’s still not awake. Since I’m working right below his bedroom and all, it’d be polite not to wake him up with the circular-saw/ShopVac combo. Once he is up, however, I’ll need to finish the half-walls in the two closets.

But that should be easy. Each one is only about two feet wide. The tricky bit is going to be building on some extra 2×4 supports for attaching drywall. I’ll be sure to take pictures so you can see what that’s like.
And right on cue, the baby monitor starts chattering. Time to get back to work.
