Home Again
Jul. 4th, 2007 10:17 pmSo, I wasn’t the only one on vacation this week. My good friend Merrie Haskell has been out at her family’s cottage, which doubles as our annual writing retreat location. While we both intended to get some writing done, she’s actually done some, whereas I got a whole lot of nothing done. But last night we did have a nice round of Frisbee (or “disc” as my brother says), which reminds me that, not only do I need to get some more writing done, but I need to get into the gym as well. I’ll see if I can crank out some words tonight, and hit the gym in the morning. But if there’s one thing I’ve discovered it’s that, on nights like tonight, when my wife is home, I have a hard time concentrating on writing. We see each other so little on the average day that I like not to ignore her too much.
Though, as I type this, I’m sitting upstairs in front of the TV watching the Tigers’ game, and my wife is down in the office working on our finances.
The vacation itself was pretty nice, though of four nights, Tony only slept all the way through two. Last night he decided to fall asleep in his dinner around 6:30, then wake up around 9:00 and I’m not sure what all his schedule was after that … until he woke up screaming at 5:00 this morning. On top of the usual heading-home-morning craziness of packing and cleaning up the place our families rented, we had to deal with a cranky kid with a crazy sleep schedule.
But that’s alright. Next year he’ll be three, and probably better at dealing with sleeping somewhere other than home. And we’ll have an infant, too.
Depending on how things go next year, I may have to try harder to sequester myself and do some writing, especially if we’re relying on more freelance income, though the question of semi-live blog-type work will still be an open one, since I doubt the campground is going to bring internet to the lodges–they’re usually used by youth camps, and wireless internet where the kids sleep would probably just be inviting shenanigans.
Mmm, shenanigans.
Anyway, game’s almost over and it’s time for me to go put some words in.
