An Exercise In Math
Mar. 5th, 2007 06:48 amLet's assume my driveway is 50 feet long. It may very well be longer, but I'm pretty sure it's not any shorter.
Let's also assume that my driveway is 20 feet wide. It's probably a little shorter, given that the garage is almost exactly 20 feet wide and the driveway is a hair narrower.
A 1000 square feet? Yeah, I'll buy that.
My new car, a beautiful black Chevy HHR 2LT is just under 6 feet wide and 14 feet long. We'll give an extra foot in both dimensions for windbreak. So, 7'x15' for 105 square feet. (And I don't want to hear from the haters about how lame my car is. Unless you drive a Ford Mustang Shelby, your car is lame, too.)
Okay, so that gets us down to 895 square feet of driveway. We'll round up to 900 for neatness' sake.
On average, I'd guess the rest of the driveway was covered in two feet of snow by Saturday morning. Mostly thanks to drifting since, as I mentioned elsewhere Friday, my driveway is where all the cool snow hangs out, so all the other snow from the neighborhood blows over from other yards and congregates there. I keep yelling at it, but to no effect.
Anyway. 2' x 900sqft = 1800 cubic feet of snow. Or, unless I messed my math somewhere 67 cubic yards. Even if I wildly overestimated the length of my driveway (and it's at least twice as long as it is wide), and did not perfectly shovel to the edges, that's a hell of a lot of snow.
Below that was a uniform 1 1/2" thick layer of frozen slush from the ice/rain/snow/nastiness mix we got on Thursday. A neighbor graciously lent me his Spring Steel shovel and I got about thirty square feet cleared before I packed it in.

tappu said that when the end-of-season deals come in on snowblowers (if there are any left), I get to get one. Which will mean no snow next winter, but that's fine by me.
