Been an interesting day for news.
First,
dsudis tells me that the Michigan Daily had a headline of "Computer Breeches[sic] Worry Experts." At which point we had an amusing discussion of the clothing habits of microprocessors.
Then, I noticed The Detroit Free Press has a cover story article blowing open the lid on the secret internet lives of college students and that, gasp, their grades are failing as a result. Gee,
tappu,
sdrawkcabyaj, and
fightin_icegrrl, we didn't know anyone like that, oh, five-six-seven years ago, did we? ;)
And then,
matociquala warns us that Army recruiters are coming after our 14 year olds, via this article. Better people than
matociquala have been taken in by hoaxes and satire, and lesser folk too, such as myself, until I read the whole article and bounced around the site a bit. (Any "news source" that purports to know that public funds were used for NAMBLA memberships is probably not on the steady-level.) The article itself preys cleverly on the fears of perpetual combat which, while not impossible, seems pretty unlikely.
Which has now put me in mind to do some kind of multi-part primer on how the military works below the massively political level.
Anyone interested?
ETA: Looks like some folks are interested, so I'll get some things organized, then maybe post a preface tonight.
